“The Strange Orc took me on a journey I was not expecting. From the cover art I was expecting a minimalist dungeon or fantasy synth adventure, but when the first notes dropped, I knew that wouldn’t be the case. A wave of nostalgia washed over me in an instant. A sense of carelessness, like being a child again opening a newly gifted toy for the first time. There’s a menagerie of different gifts to pick from throughout this album, and new surprises at every turn. In the “Lowly Beginnings” (that’s the name of the first track), a playful tune dances around over plodding drumming. A fuzzed out narrator takes us through our first dungeon journey with the Strange Orc. The second song and title track, “Hiding From The Moon,” brings us more towards an ambient sound, but is still playful with its timing and rhythm like walking along and skipping every other step or two. The pleasantly lilting progression actually served to draw me along as if in a trance. More variety is presented throughout the next few songs, an eclectic mix of sometimes comfy sometimes dark and all the time synthesizer. “Counting Butterflies” would be right at home with a stroll through flowering hedges while “Lowly Orc, Your Kingdom Awaits Ye!” spins the tale of a true dungeon adventurer. “Potion Cabinet” is yet another unique element, drawing on wondrous mystery and fascination. While pondering the simple complexity of the melodies and ambiguity of the samples chosen that dance on familiarity, suddenly we are hit with the Yamaha “DJ!” mode intro sounds like wham! I laughed out loud with a big smile, this album breaks away from serious and anchors itself in dreams of nostalgia in just the right way. You can’t follow that up with a song so wistful and beautiful you would feel moved to tears, right? That’s just what Strange Orc does with “I Love You So Much I Hold My Breath.” The tone created in this song is of mournful organs and undulating strings. Pipes call out over drifting bass and extend their arms as if seeking a warm embrace. The end of our journey sees a reprise of “Lowly Beginnings” as the triumphant conclusion. All that was to be experienced has been experienced and we are left with a new sense of wonder and curiosity for what lies ahead.” – The Curator
